Closing TAFEs: Victoria – Dumb It Down

The Victorian Government, under Ted Bailleau, has taken the axe to education in that state.

Not only has funding been slashed, and fees raised, but education has been sold-out to private for-profit education provides which takes training and learning out of the community and makes it available only to the wealthy.

Disadvantaging many people who have no other opportunities than TAFE (Technical And Further Education) and draining skills from the state, this is one cost-cutting measure that will end up causing more damage to the state in the long run that what is saved in the short term.

Other areas that will suffer is retraining for older workers who find themselves unemployed after their jobs are off-shored, or are re-entering the workforce after perhaps having children, being longer term carer for family members or changed circumstances.

These cuts don’t just affect students, it affects the whole community.
