  1. Even if it was a tax, there are good taxes for the economy and bad taxes. Within 3 weeks of studying an economics degree (in the hope of one day improving the economy) you learn about the term “externality”. It is a term given to something that leads to negative consequences for the economy (and generally other people), yet is legal. All economists argue the best way to combat an externality is to put a price on it. Then in economically “rational decision making” the entity will alter their behaviour to avoid the price. So simple even Tony should understand it.

  2. GetUp! also put it succinctly into a single sentence:

    GetUp!: – The point of a carbon price is to stop industry polluting for free, and to make clean energy cheaper.
